Why LaVida?

La Vida means “LIFE” in Spanish.

LIFE IS BETTER WHEN YOU DANCE!

The Story

“My grandma loved dancing. She was never formally trained. I often found myself dancing with her around the living room to her favorite free and life-loving Gypsy music, full of joy and laughter. I was young, too young to remember the details, but wrapping myself into a curtain, putting mom’s heels on, and pretending to be a beautiful dancer apparently was my thing. Apparently I’ve been telling my mom “I want to dance” since before I could even pronounce those words clearly.

When I was 8 years old, my mom finally got a chance to bring me to a local dance company to sign me up for the beginning of dance season. They were holding an audition for a youth ballroom dance troop, which was popular in those days in Moscow (Russia). Oh, this day was the day I’d been waiting for! My heart was pumping with joy and anxiety at the same time. How could it not be? A few days prior, I had hysterically cried watching a ballroom dance competition on TV from the overwhelm of the strong, positive emotions music and dance created within me. My mom had to change the channel to calm me down.

We came up to a sign-up table. “How old is she?” the lady asked.

“She is 8,” mom replied.

“Too old. We don’t accept kids over 6 years old.”

“Can you still audition her?” Mom, who was a piano teacher at a music school that normally auditioned kids for placement, insisted.

“No. It doesn’t matter how good she is. She is just too old.”

I was standing there holding my mom’s hand, not understanding why she was almost crying. She knew how bad I wanted to dance and wished me the best. WHY can’t I dance? What now? Maybe another place? These thoughts raced through my mind. Mom tried calling other places, and the answer was the same: “Too old.” There was no place that could give me an opportunity to start dancing at that age, to believe in my abilities, and to help me grow. I felt helpless.

The first denial was the greatest denial in my life of what was then the most important for me ever.”

~Natasha Maltseva, Artistic Director

Fast-forward to nowadays, and the denial has had the most impact and is the reason LaVida Studio exists.

This is the very essence of why we welcome all and believe that everyone should have an opportunity to start dancing, whether young or not so young, boy or girl, and men or women of all ages, cultures and faiths.

This is the reason why we offer the following:

  • Support to find right class for each person
  • Beginner classes for any age
  • Classes in various dance styles
  • Classes with instructors of various teaching styles
  • Group or private lessons
  • Welcoming and friendly front desk
  • Easy enrollment and signup process
  • Russian-speaking classes for young dancers, so they can start dancing, even if they don’t speak English yet
  • Participation in community events to promote all the above

What our Clients Say

Our valued community is what makes our studio a success.
See more of our glowing reviews at Listen360!

My daughter has been enrolled here for over a year and absolutely loves it. The staff is friendly, communicative, and what’s important always tries to accommodate families’ needs. For example, they offer make-up classes if you let them know in advance—which is a must for families with small kids. Or borrow dance shoes if you accidentally forgot them.

The studio is truly family-friendly. You can wait in the lobby with younger siblings while an older child is in class, which is incredibly helpful. They also host two wonderful performances every year that my daughter and we all enjoy, and they communicate every detail very clearly. They have fun holiday traditions too—like Santa visiting the studio, Halloween dance classes with costumes, and other small events that is exciting for kids.

LaVida was the perfect place for us to choreograph our first dance. Our instructor was Elena and she was an absolute joy to work with she made it a custom first dance none of our guest will be forgetting adding some extra magic to our special day 😄 highly recommend their wedding dance packages as they give you video to practice and work with whatever music you bring them in !

Our family danced our worries away at this studio for 12 years. Thank you, LaVida!

My daughter is excited about her classes, and she became generally happier in everyday life. She grows in her strength, energy, flexibility, skills, and thus confidence. We are receiving all that we hoped for! Well done and thank you!

LaVida Dance Studio is one of the most welcoming and friendly dance studios I have ever been to.

Family friendly, kids friendly atmosphere encouraging kids learn dance and have joy! I can see how my kids are growing to love dance and moving around and dance at the stage, I find it’s so important skill all while they just having joy! Thanks Lavida!!!

Creative problem solving approach, very good organization and communication. We (parents) always know what to expect and what’s expected from us in a timely manner.

Thank you for organizing such a wonderful dance recital! We had an amazing time and couldn’t be prouder of everything our daughter has learned over the past five months. A big shout-out to all the teachers and organizers for their hard work!

I love the friendliness of the staff and the joy in my daughter’s face when she is in dance class and how she is excited about what she learns each week.

Ashley

Ashley

Program Director, Dance Instructor and Teams Coach

Ashley grew up in Wenatchee, WA and has been dancing since the age of 3 and started competing at 6. She has had the opportunity to go to New York 3 times to take classes at Broadway Dance Center and conventions where she learned from renown dancers such as Twitch, Mia Michaels, Wade Robson, Travis Wall and many more. Her senior year, she got selected to go to Paris for a week with a group of dancers to take classes at Centre de Danse du Marais.
As her love and knowledge of dance grew, she started assisting classes at 10 and then teaching her own classes at 15. After high school she moved to Pullman, WA where she received her BS in Chemical Engineering. Throughout her time there she taught at a local studio and her drive and commitment led her to become the director's right-hand women. After graduating, she quickly learned that she had no passion in the engineering field, as her true passion was all things dance. She decided to get her MBA, so she could broaden her understanding of running all faucets of a dance studio.
When she began teaching, she found true happiness. Sharing her love for dance with others and seeing them grow and shine brings her such joy. She has taught ages 2-18 in ballet, jazz, tap, and contemporary. She has choreographed solos, duo/trios, and group routines for both performances and competitions. Many of her dances have won overall placements and specialty awards when competing. In 2014, she was crowned Miss East Cascades and went on to compete for the title of Miss Washington.

She moved to the east side in 2018 and now resides in Bothell alongside her husband, daughter and dog. In her free time, she enjoys completing puzzles and crafts, cooking, and playing with her daughter, Kinsley.

Shan first joined the dance world at age two, and it was love at first plié! They took many styles of dance over the years, including ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, and more. Their first professional job was working backstage for Western Canada Theatre’s touring production of The Backyardigans.

As a teenager, Shan also developed a deep love and talent for music, eventually becoming a solo clarinetist in the Kamloops Community Band.

After high school, Shan worked as a receptionist for a couple of years, before deciding to leave Canada’s winters behind. They first moved to Tacoma, but eventually landed in Seattle, where they still live today.

Shan studied Early Childhood Education at North Seattle College, and spent many wonderful years working as a nanny, sharing their love of dance and music with all of their charges.

Shan is thrilled to be back in the dance world in a support role!

In their free time, Shan enjoys hanging out with their spouse and cat, playing games with friends, researching obscure history, or making something delicious in the kitchen. Each style has its own vocabulary of moves with different emotions and elements. It has become my favorite tool to communicate ideas and create art. I love dance and never tire of it, as working on myself always pays off in terms of both my mental and physical health. I believe dance is an open canvas where anyone can create their own masterpiece, regardless of their background. While executing a polished piece requires practice and technique, everyone can learn to move to music, just as anyone can learn to speak."
